Can I end my car finance early?
Usually, yes. With HP or PCP, the main routes are early settlement or voluntary termination. They work differently and can leave you with different costs.
Early settlement means paying the amount needed to clear the finance. Voluntary termination means using a legal right to end a qualifying agreement and return the car.
Start by checking your agreement type. A personal loan or lease has different rules. Read how car finance works if you're unsure what you have.
What is an early settlement figure?
A settlement figure is the amount the lender says you must pay to clear the agreement on a stated date. Request it directly from the lender.
It can differ from the sum of your remaining payments because early repayment rules account for future interest. Any permitted charges should be included or explained.
Ask for the figure in writing, its expiry date and payment instructions. Check whether a payment due before settlement has already been included.
Once you've paid everything required to settle HP or PCP, ownership can pass to you. Get written confirmation that the agreement is closed before selling the car yourself.
What is voluntary termination?
Voluntary termination is a right under the Consumer Credit Act 1974 for qualifying HP and PCP agreements. It lets you end the agreement and return the car.
Once you've paid half the total amount payable, are up to date and have taken reasonable care of the car, you can usually return it without further payments under this right.
You can use voluntary termination before reaching half, but may still owe the difference. Ask the lender for a written breakdown of what remains payable.
Tell the lender clearly, in writing, that you're exercising your right to voluntary termination. Keep a copy and arrange the return with the lender.
Citizens Advice explains your right to end hire purchase.
Does halfway mean halfway through the agreement?
No. It means half the total amount payable, not half the months or half the car's cash price. Your agreement should show the relevant figure.
The total includes interest and relevant charges. For PCP, it includes the large final payment, even if you planned to return the car at the scheduled end.
Your deposit and payments count towards the halfway figure. Because PCP leaves a large payment until the end, you may reach half quite late in the agreement.
If you've already paid more than half, voluntary termination doesn't give you a refund of the extra. Ask how any arrears affect the amount still due.
Can I be charged for damage or mileage?
You must have taken reasonable care of the car. Damage beyond reasonable wear can lead to a charge when you use voluntary termination.
Photograph the car inside and out before collection. Record the mileage and keep servicing records, inspection reports and proof that you handed over the keys.
Mileage charges can be disputed in voluntary termination cases. Don't assume the rules for returning PCP at its scheduled end apply in exactly the same way.
Ask for the reason and evidence for any charge. Get independent help if you disagree, rather than accepting a bill you don't understand.
Is voluntary surrender the same thing?
No. With voluntary surrender, you agree to hand back the car and the lender usually sells it. You can still owe the balance after the sale proceeds are deducted.
That remaining balance can be more than you would owe through voluntary termination. The wording matters, so make clear which option you want to use.
Don't sign a surrender form without understanding it. If you're unsure, ask a debt adviser to explain the difference before agreeing to return the car.
Can I part exchange a car on finance?
Often, yes, if the existing finance is settled as part of the transaction. Ask the lender and dealer how this will happen before committing to another car.
Get a current settlement figure and a written valuation. If the car is worth more than settlement, the difference may be available towards your next car.
If it's worth less, you have negative equity. You must cover the shortfall or, if available and accepted by a lender, include it in new borrowing.
Adding old debt to new borrowing increases what you owe. Check the full cost and get confirmation that the old agreement has been settled.
Can I sell the car and pay off the finance?
With HP or PCP, you don't own the car until you've met the ownership conditions. Don't sell it privately while the lender still owns it.
Ask about settling first or a sale process the lender accepts. Don't assume a buyer paying you clears the finance automatically.
With an unsecured personal loan, you normally own the car from purchase. You can sell it, but the loan remains payable unless you repay it.
Our guides to hire purchase and PCP explain ownership and end options.
Will ending finance early affect my credit record?
How the account is recorded depends on how it ends and whether payments are up to date. Voluntary termination can appear on your credit file.
Missed payments can affect your credit record. Ending an agreement doesn't erase earlier payment problems, and future lending decisions remain with each lender.
Check the account after closure. If the balance or status looks wrong, contact the lender and credit reference agency with your settlement or return records.
Can I cancel within 14 days?
Many consumer credit agreements have a 14-day withdrawal right under the Consumer Credit Act 1974. Check your agreement for when the period starts.
Withdrawing from the credit doesn't automatically cancel the car purchase. You must repay the credit and interest due within 30 days of giving notice.
What if I'm ending finance because of a fault?
For consumer HP or PCP, the finance company is responsible for the car's quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. Report the fault and keep evidence.
A faulty car complaint is different from voluntary termination. If unresolved, check whether the Financial Ombudsman Service can help.
What if I can't afford the payments?
Contact the lender early. With HP or PCP, the car may be taken back if payments aren't kept up. Missed payments can also affect your credit record.
For qualifying consumer HP or PCP, once you've paid a third of the total amount payable, the lender normally needs a court order to repossess without your consent.
That protection doesn't cancel the debt. StepChange offers free debt advice if payments are becoming difficult.
What should I check before another agreement?
Confirm what ending your current agreement will cost. Include any shortfall, deposit and running costs in your next budget.
If you're considering another car, fill in the form. A car finance specialist then gets in touch, explains the options and gives any quote and any advice.
The lender decides any application and provides any finance. Requirements vary by lender.
