What is hire purchase?
Hire purchase, often called HP, is a way to pay for a car over time. You hire it from a finance company while making agreed payments.
You may pay a deposit first. Monthly payments then cover the remaining cost of the car, plus interest. There may also be an option to purchase fee.
The finance company owns the car until you've met the agreement's purchase conditions. Once you've made all required payments, ownership passes to you.
HP can be used for new or used cars. The cars available, deposit requirements and lending terms vary by lender.
How does hire purchase work?
- Choose a car and work out an affordable budget.
- Check the deposit, repayment term, interest, fees and total amount payable.
- Make an application for the lender to assess.
- If the agreement goes ahead, pay any deposit and the agreed monthly payments.
- Complete all required payments, including any purchase fee, to become the owner.
Before signing, check when payments start and how they're collected. Make sure the written agreement matches the quote you've been given.
Ask what happens if you need to change the payment date. Any flexibility depends on the lender and the agreement.
How much will HP cost?
Your costs depend on the car, deposit, amount borrowed, interest rate, fees and repayment term. Your circumstances can affect the terms a lender offers.
Check both the monthly payment and the total amount payable. APR, or annual percentage rate, includes interest and certain fees to help show borrowing costs.
Spreading repayments over longer can reduce each monthly payment. It can also mean paying more interest overall.
A calculator can help you test different borrowing amounts and terms. The result is an estimate, not a quote or a decision about your application.
Budget for insurance, vehicle tax, fuel or charging, maintenance and repairs too. These costs usually sit outside your finance payment.
Do I need a deposit for HP?
A deposit reduces the amount you need to borrow. Deposit requirements vary by lender, and some agreements may be available without one.
Borrowing more for the same car can increase the interest you pay. Check the full cost rather than focusing only on what you pay upfront.
If you're using an existing car towards the deposit, check whether finance is still outstanding on it. Any amount needed to clear that finance reduces its available value.
Keep enough money for essential bills and unexpected costs. A deposit shouldn't leave you unable to pay for insurance or urgent repairs.
Is HP different from PCP?
Standard HP spreads the car's remaining cost across the repayment term. It doesn't leave a large optional final payment to buy the car.
PCP holds back part of that cost until the end. You pay that optional final amount if you want ownership, or return the car under the agreement's terms.
For the same car, deposit and term, HP monthly payments are often higher. The overall cost depends on the actual agreements offered.
Read PCP explained and HP versus PCP to understand the different end choices.
Does hire purchase have mileage limits?
Standard HP usually has no annual mileage limit. Check the agreement, as terms vary by lender and product.
You still need to look after the car. Follow its service schedule and check any requirements for insurance, maintenance and permitted use.
High mileage can reduce the car's resale value, even without a mileage charge. It can also increase servicing and repair costs while you're repaying the finance.
Ask the lender before modifying the car or taking it abroad. Being able to drive it doesn't give you every right an owner has.
Will an HP application involve credit checks?
The lender assesses your credit record and whether you can afford repayments. It may ask for evidence of income and details of your spending.
Ask a car finance specialist which credit searches will happen at each stage. A hard search leaves a record that other lenders can see.
Several applications close together can affect future lending decisions. Don't assume every quote request uses the same type of search.
A lender can decline an application. A credit score alone doesn't decide the outcome, and lender requirements vary.
Can I withdraw from an HP agreement?
The Consumer Credit Act 1974 gives a 14 day withdrawal right for credit agreements covered by that right. You don't need to give a reason.
The period normally starts when the agreement is made or you receive the required agreement information, whichever is later.
Notify the lender in time, then repay the credit and interest due within 30 days of giving notice.
Withdrawing from the credit doesn't automatically cancel the car purchase. You'll need another way to pay unless the purchase is separately cancelled.
Can I pay off HP early?
For agreements covered by the Consumer Credit Act 1974, you can settle early. Ask the lender for a written settlement figure.
The figure allows for the applicable reduction in future interest and any permitted charges. Check how long it's valid and how payment must be made.
Once you've paid everything needed to settle and take ownership, the car becomes yours. Ask for written confirmation before selling it.
See ending car finance early for the difference between paying off the agreement and returning the car.
Can I return an HP car early?
Qualifying HP agreements have voluntary termination rights under the Consumer Credit Act 1974. You can end the agreement and return the car.
Your liability is generally limited to half the total amount payable, provided you've taken reasonable care of the car. Arrears and condition issues can affect what you owe.
If you've paid less, you can end the agreement but must make up the shortfall to that halfway amount. Check the figure shown in your contract.
This is half the total amount payable, including interest and relevant fees. It isn't simply half the car's cash price or half the monthly payments.
Tell the lender clearly in writing that you want voluntary termination. Simply handing back the keys may leave you owing a different amount.
What happens if I can't pay my HP?
The car may be taken back if payments aren't kept up. Missed payments affect your credit record.
For agreements covered by the Consumer Credit Act 1974, paying a third of the total amount payable gives repossession protection.
After that point, the lender needs a court order to take the car back unless you consent. This doesn't remove your duty to pay.
Contact the lender early. Free debt help is available from StepChange. Get help promptly if repossession is threatened.
Who is responsible if an HP car is faulty?
The finance company is responsible for the car's quality under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. It must be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described.
What's reasonable depends on factors including age, mileage and price. Report problems promptly. Keep photographs, repair reports and copies of messages.
Complain to the finance company first. You may then be able to use the Financial Ombudsman Service.
How do I ask about HP?
Complete the quote form. A car finance specialist then gets in touch, explains the options and gives any quote and any advice.
The lender decides any application and provides any finance. Check the full agreement before signing.
